Topic: “Reaching for the Stars Using Radio Telescopes.”

Speaker: Dr. Mumbua Miriam

Affiliation: South African Radio Astronomical Observatory (SARAO)

Biography: Dr Miriam Nyamai is originally from Kenya but currently based at South African Radio
Astronomy Observatory (SARAO). Her research focuses on radio wavelength studies of
thermonuclear eruptions on the surface of white dwarf stars and radio transients. She has
successfully obtained and reduced radio data for thermonuclear eruptions and modelled the radio
emission arising from these eruptions. She is currently looking at radio data from the MeerKAT
(South African radio telescope) Large Survey projects to search for radio transients. She holds a
PhD in Astrophysics (2021, University of Cape Town, South Africa); MSc (2017, University of
the Free State, South Africa); BSc honors (2014, University of Cape Town, South Africa); B.Ed.
honors (2012, Kenyatta University, Kenya).
